Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are Essential Fatty Acids, meaning the body needs these fatty acids to thrive and be healthy. The body, however, does not produce these fatty acids themselves, and needs to receive them through food and supplemental sources. Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids can be derived from a number of sources including plant, vegetable and animal sources. Omega 9 fatty acid does have some benefits within the body, but it is not an essential fatty acid as the body is capable of deriving omega 9 fatty acids itself.
Omega 3 fatty acid is, perhaps, the most important essential fatty acid, and 3 of the most common and necessary of the Omega 3 fatty acids are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and Linolenic acid. These acids can be derived from some plant sources such as flaxseed and from fish oils. It is the linolenic omega 3 fatty acid that is most prominent in flaxseed oil, but it is also one of the lesser effective omega 3 fatty acids. Fish oils contain much more of the valuable EPA and DHA omega 3 fatty acids that are required to facilitate a number of critical biological processes in the body.
Omega 3 fatty acids are known to possess anti-inflammatory properties, the are known to improve blood flow and to reduce blood pressure, they possess anti-carcinogenic properties and have the ability to improve immune function. Omega 3 fatty acids are also important for good organ health, especially brain and heart.
Omega 6 fatty acids are also classified as Essential fatty acids as, like omega 3 fatty acids, the body is incapable of deriving these and they must be introduced from outside sources. The predominant omega 6 fatty acids are linoleic and arachidonic acids, and can be found in nuts, eggs, flaxseed, corn oil, safflower oil among other foods. While omega 6 fatty acids are required for certain biological processes such as the formation of prostaglandin, they do have a number of otherwise undesirable effects. Prostaglandin, for example, while a necessary intermediate in certain processes is also responsible for increasing the body's sensitivity to pain and inflammation. Moreover, excess levels of omega 6 fatty acids can be linked to increased cancer risks and arthritis. Omega 6 fatty acids also compete with omega 3 fatty acids for certain enzymes so when omega 6 is prevalent the benefits that might otherwise have been derived from omega 3 fatty acids is diminished.
While both omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids both are required by the body excess omega 6 is not desirable. Ideally the ratio of Omega 6 : Omega 3 should be 3:1 - 5:1 and ideally should not exceed 10:1.
Omega 9 fatty acids, while they do contribute somewhat to healthy skin and coat, and they do possess some anti-carcinogenic properties, often take a 'fill-in' role. Omega 9 fatty acids, including oleic acid, are NOT ESSENTIAL as the body is capable of synthesizing them within the body. The body tends toward their formation in environments where Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are depleted and the body is then producing omega 9 trying to fill the void. This, however, over time results in a degradation of health as the omega 9 fatty acids really are not as potent as the omega 3 and omega 6 thus overall health declines over time. They can be sourced in flax oil and in olive oil, peanuts and peanut oil.
